I spent a lot of time thinking about what part of my body I wanted to scan. Since there was no censorship and I did want to go out of the box, I decided to do my vagina. So I scanned it and then distorted it a little and made it extremely dark so you could barely see anything. I didn't really want the whole world to see my vagina up close and personal. I was inspired by the dada movement, and all the collages so I did a collage of words out of a magazine I thought reminded me of sex and the body in media. I kind of placed the words so they appear like teeth on the lips I made out of a folder and FedEx box pieces. I used the top of my desk, I was supposed to build months ago and I know I will never build it so I tiled the scanned pictures of myself and then wrote out what is the value on the bottom. I finally made the lips pop off the board. I think it looks pretty sweet.
i knew santiago was going to like this!
ReplyDeletegood for you for shooting outside of the box and being different!
i like it, i'm glad you didn't hold back and you went for it.
I like your whole theme of the "value of sex".
good job :)
I'm trying to figure out how you accomplished the scan, which is something that art should do - motivate imagination. However, are you comfortable with viewers thinking about your body?
ReplyDeleteI like that you can't really tell what the photocopy is. Similar to Duchamp's Underwood typewriter cover, I wonder, "Is that really what she claims it is?"
I like the deconstruction of the folders and the use of word cut-outs. The white lines left on your photocopies add a very nice graphical element and promotes the tiled effect, but you need to make sure that they are perfectly straight or it just looks like you were too lazy to cut them off. I don't really care for the paper cut-outs of the women and I would like to see the lips raised (popped out, 3D) off the desktop horizontally instead of the vertical intersection. Or, if you want to keep them vertical, maybe cut a straight line across the bottom part so they look like there coming out of the desktop. I think these things would make your piece show worthy.
Hope the suggestions doesn't cover that fact that I really think your concept is great, if I didn't I would just say "Good Job" or some other generic comment. I'm not very comfortable with telling people how I feel about their artwork, but I just felt compelled to say something about this . . . I'll shut up now.
Very NICE !!!
when you told our class that you decided to xerox your vagina. i was very surprised, but your project came out great. I loved that you made the lips pop off of the board, and the colors used were great.
ReplyDeleteAlexandria, I really liked the concept and idea of your project! You also took a risk like many of the artists we've been learning about in class. It was very daring and meaningful!
ReplyDeleteAlexandria, your project was indeed surprising and daring. Good for you though as an artist not to hold back and be yourself with the emotional expressions presented in your project.
ReplyDeleteArt to me, always is supposed to represent some statement of revealing the hidden emotions of the artist and bypass the barrier (of control) to express it.
Is art supposed to be admired by you or the viewer?
To me it is more important for the artist to be happy and show his or her full potential and aura with their piece.
Good job
I really liked the detail of the lips being a 3-D effect, with the folder ends being the crease to the mouth. The cut outs were also very clever and added cool effect. I forgot if the Marilyn Monroe image was in your collage, but in any case, it does add alternate sources of expression, and perhaps draws more power to the piece.
alexandria, i loved your uncensored idea of scanning your vagina. very daring and artistic in both process and final print. good for you girl. on a technical level, i wished your project may have had more scans of other body parts to compliment it, but other than that awesome.
ReplyDeleteI cant believe you xeroxed your hoo-ha! That is crazy!!!!! It was a very interesting concept though :)
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe that you photographed your V! WOW! You sure took a risk there! I liked that you used those pictures and then created your own lips. Very symbolic. It was very interesting different!
ReplyDeleteThis was pretty cool, well done for being bold enough to photocopy your (it appears all versions of the word vagina have been taken above) but it was still a good piece.
